The National Hereford Show 2022 was held on Sunday 14th August as it returned to the Tullamore Show! The show was a great success with over 90 Hereford cattle exhibited on the day and record numbers of spectators stopping by to watch the action.

Judging

The Society were delighted to welcome Mr. Robert Clarke to judge the cattle classes. Robert has spent a lifetime working on various Pedigree farms in the UK including Badlingham Herefords on which his father also worked. With the large entry of top quality Hereford cattle presented for competition – judging was no easy task but Robert executed the task flawlessly and though faced with a tough decision – he crowned our National Hereford Champion 2022.

Young Handlers

Taking on maybe the most important job of the day was Ms. Maddie Clarke, daughter of Robert, who judged the Hereford Junior & Senior Young Handler classes. Maddie has been heavily involved in the Hereford, Angus and Charolais youth programmes in the UK for several years now and just recently she won the UK Charolais Youth National Stockjudging Final and will now be progressing to the Charolais Championship Final in Moulins, France. We wish Maddie the very best of luck going forward.

There was good turn out of Young Handlers and the standard was extremely high among all of the competitors. Congratulations to all young Handlers on the day who each did a stand-out job!

Hereford Junior Young Handler Class

Congratulations are extended to Clodagh McCaffrey who won the Junior class after only starting her showing career this summer under the mentorship of Mr. Frank Harrington. Clodagh also assisted Frank at judging a Suffolk sheep event in the days previous to Tullamore.

Presentation

The IHBS Council were delighted to be able to make two presentations on the day of the show to two former members of the team who both retired during 2021 when Covid-19 was still hindering plans.

Mr. Hugh Mulvihill was Society auctioneer for well over 20 years and was a great asset to the team – auctioneering at both annual bull sales and breeders production and dispersal sales by special request on many occasions.

Ms. Lesley Sandes worked as Society field officer for 40 years and over time got to know the breeders and their families and worked closely with them, giving great time and dedication to the Society and it’s breeders.

The society wish to thank both Hugh & Lesley for their long years of service and good work and wish them both well in their retirement.

Exhibition

The Society and Irish Hereford Prime teamed up this year to host an exhibition stand with three cross bred Hereford Suckler cattle on display to promote the benefits of crossing commercial sucklers with a Hereford sire. The cattle were supplied by Niall & Lisa Daly from the Gageboro Hereford herd, Westmeath. The crossbreds looked very well and attracted a lot of attention throughout the day while receiving lots of positive comments.

Irish Hereford Prime also hosted a free draw for the public to guess the average weight of the three crossbreds. Congratulations to the winner of the draw; Stephanie Richie from Cavan. All activities encouraged a steady flow of spectators throughout the tent all day.
