Thomas Brennan’s Balleen Herefords held an online production sale of 20 maiden heifers and 6 embryos through Mid-Tipp Mart from September 13th to 16th.
A lively trade over the weekend, saw a 65% clearance, with 13 of the 20 heifers selling to a strong average of €4,146. The €5,000 mark was crossed by 6 heifers and the 6 embryos offered for sale were all sold to an average of €550.
The top price of the sale was lot 7, Balleen Yoko 1400. This stylish, March 2023-born heifer, was sired by the Balleen herd’s stock bull, Ballinveney United 2 and boasted a four-star replacement index of €104 and a five-star terminal index value of €86.

A further two heifers reached €5,400 by the close of the auction, lot 4, April 2023-born Balleen Prettymaid 1404 doing so first. She was sired by Cill Cormaic Kasper and out of a homebred dam, Balleen Prettymaid 1255 and had an impressive replacement index of €147.

Also reaching a price of €5,400 was lot 12, Balleen Moobee 1392, born February 2023. She was out of Balleen Moobee 805 (daughter of Gageboro Eugenic) and a half-sister through her sire, Ballinveney United 2, to the top priced heifer in the sale.

Another Ballinveney United 2 daughter, lot 14, Balleen Yoko 1394 traded at €5,200. She was also a February 2023 heifer, from another Yoko cow, Balleen Yoko 1040.

A further two heifers would go on to achieve €5,000, lot 10 and lot 11. Lot 10, another Ballinveney United 2 daughter, also from the Yoko cow line, Balleen Yoko 1384. She was out of the home-bred Balleen Yoko 968. 1384 boasted a five-star milk figure of +7.8 kg and a five-star carcase weight figure of +14.3 kg. Lot 11 crossing the threshold of €5,000, was Balleen Ladybird 1390. Another daughter of Ballinveney United 2 and out of Balleen Ladybird 1026, this double five-star heifer was also popular with bidders.
