There was a great buzz in GVM Tullamore on the morning of Saturday 16th November, as a strong entry of Hereford calves were unloaded for the Irish Hereford Breed Society’s 10th National Calf Show, sponsored by Dovea Genetics and Irish Hereford Prime.
The judge on the day was Mr. Tom O’Riordan, from Co. Cork, and he had a tough job to judge the 11 classes on the day. The DBI class and the traditional commercial class were judged by Mr. David Faughnan from Co. Sligo. Both judges were meticulous in their decision making and were very fair with their time given the large classes exhibiting.
The senior male champion tapped forward by Mr. O’Riordan was Co. Cavan breeder, Shane McKiernan’s January ’24 bull, Drumcarbin Rory. Rory would go on to be crowned supreme male champion of the show. The reserve champion senior male was John Mullooly of Co. Roscommon’s Cloonfree Fruitful.
The junior male championship was awarded to another Co. Roscommon breeder, Michael Curley, for his February born bull, Cloonabrack Toby. Toby was later awarded the reserve supreme champion of the show. Reserve champion junior male was awarded to Kathleen Stokes of Co. Cork with her young bull, Astellas Hurler 1.
On the female side then, it was the turn of Sarah and Heidi Murray of Co. Westmeath to take the glory in the senior, and subsequently supreme female championships with their heifer, Shilo-Farm Just The One ET. Reserve champion senior female was won by another Co. Westmeath breeder, Elisa Drumm, with her heifer Crowenstown Orange V1.
Co. Monaghan breeder, Nigel Heatrick took the honours in the junior heifer championship, with his seven-month-old Glaslough Barbie. She then went on to stand as reserve supreme champion female of the show. Reserve junior female champion was Co. Limerick breeder, Jack O’Connor, with young heifer Clonlough Hazel 3rd.
The high quality of stock on display on the day was a testament to all of the breeders who exhibited, with large crowds of onlookers there to watch the day’s events unfold.
