The Irish Hereford Breed Society held its first stand-alone heifer show and sale on Saturday 14th December in GVM Tullamore Mart, Co. Offaly. A quality showing of 18 heifers (all eligible for export) were turned out on the day, with a representation from all four provinces making the journey.
The pre-sale show, kicking off at 11am, went off very smoothly, with judge, Mr. Philip Lynch tapping out Monaghan breeder, Nigel Heatrick’s in-calf heifer and winner of class 1, Glaslough Yoselin as sale Champion. This powerful heifer was sired by Cill Cormaic Quinlan and out of homebred cow, Glaslough Texas.
Standing at Reserve Champion was Sarah and Heidi Murray’s maiden heifer, winner of class 4, Shiloh-Farm Jasmine PH. This stylish Corlismore Cormac daughter, out of Shiloh-Farm Heather had previously come out on top in a very competitive show class.

The sale subsequently began at 1pm, with 17 of 18 heifers finding new homes at an average price of €3,170. Sale Champion, Glaslough Yoselin went on to sell for €4,400, with Reserve Champion Shiloh-Farm Jasmine selling at €4,250.
However, it was the 5-star, second prize winner from class 4, Appel 1 Molly 15 from Cork breeder, John Appelbe who would take the honour of top price on the day, She was eventually knocked down by auctioneer Mr.Eamonn Gaffney at €4,500, to Michael Bird’s Dunlever Herd in Co. Meath.
In total, 5 heifers would sell to over €4,000, with Nigel Heatrick’s Glaslough Annabelle and John Appelbe’s Appel 1 Beautiful both also selling for €4,000.
Three other heifers went on to reach over €3,000. Roscommon breeder, Coman Neary’s in-calf heifer, Clooncullane Edie, went on to sell for €3,500. Midlands breeder, Aidan Farrell from Co. Westmeath, received €3,400 for his in-calf heifer, Mountwilliams Rachell and Co. Carlow breeder, James Thompson sold Ballyraggan Lark for €3,200.
All-in-all, the Irish Hereford Breed Society was delighted with the success of this new sale, which was the final sale of a very successful 2024. They thank all the buyers and sellers that supported the sale and wish all purchasers the best of luck with their new stock.
