Cork Born Dominarigle 1 Prince Crowned Junior & Reserve Overall Male Champion at Balmoral

Clare born Dominarigle 1 Prince Junior and Reserve Male Champion at RUAS 2016
Clare born Dominarigle 1 Prince Junior and Reserve Male Champion at RUAS 2016

A number of Herefords featuring amongst the top prize-winners at the RUAS Balmoral had very strong southern connections not least amongst them the Cork born Dominarigle 1 Prince.

A strong Hereford class of 2015 born bulls was led by the greatly admired Dominarigle 1 Prince 658 brought out by Mrs Jacqueline Martin, Saintfield. This yearling bull initially won out his class and was later tapped out Junior Champion and Reserve Male Champion by the Judge.

This young prospect was initially purchased by Gerry and Ciara McNamara, Labasheeda, Ennis, with Corlismorepoll 1 Sydney which he purchased at the O’Keeffe’s Gurteragh sale for the top price of €7,000 with her two and a half month old calf Dominarigle 1 Prince 658 at foot. The sire of Prince Gurteragh Justice is bred and owned by Michael O’Keeffe, Gurteragh, Newmarket, Co Cork.

It was at the National Hereford Calf Show held at Tullamore in November that the Martin family from Saintfield, Co Down first spotted their championship winner when he was exhibited by Hereford breeders Gerry and Ciara McNamara in the class for calves born on or after March 2015. The Martin family expressed a strong interest in the calf and following successful negotiations Dominarigle 1 Prince was on his way to stardom.

Standing in 2nd place and next to the Reserve Junior Champion in his class was a young bull Umgola 1 Impact bred by Stephen Baxter and shown by current owner Aaron Patterson. This calf is sired by last year’s Northern Ireland stock bull of the year Dernaroy 1 Impact bred by Eric Humphreys, Dernaroy, Newbliss, Co Monaghan.

The first prize-winner in the cow class Solpoll 1 Pansy C4 shown by J & W McMordie is sired by UDEL 1 R51 Vindicator bred by D & D Carroll, Coole, Campile, Co Wexford while the 4th prize-winner in the same class Corraback Clover 4th shown by Mervyn Richmond is sired by Ballyaville Don from the herd of J & I Deverell, Balyaville Geashill.

Coote Geelan, Dromod was well pleased with his 4th rosette for Baltymore Orange 449 by his former RUAS Champion Kye Rodge553. In a class for bulls born prior to April 1st 2014 Ciaran Kerr was awarded a 3rd placing for his bull Mullaghdoopoll 1 Elite bred by Killeshandra, Co Cavan breeder Basil Arnold. Standing next in the line Maheraknock Herefords exhibited Lislaughtin Kenny by Grianan Gaffer their purchase at the Lislaughtin dispersal for the Fitzell Family, Ballylongford, Co Kerry.

The Group of Three cattle from one exhibitor saw the Solpoll team selected as class leaders, with the Haires in second and Dromod, Co. Leitrim based Coote Geelan in third. The well-known Leitrim breeder was winner of the Supreme Hereford Championship with his bull Kye Rodge 553 in 2012.

All of the classes were watched by a packed ringside of visitors to the show. Sponsorship for the Hereford section was kindly provided by Lidl.
