SLANEY FOODS INTERNATIONAL PRESENT PRIZES TO WINNERS OF COMPETITION HELD AT THE NPC 2014

Between the 23rd and 25th September, Slaney Foods International participated in the National Ploughing Championships on the Irish Hereford Breed Society Stand.  Centre stage on the Slaney display was the award winning Hereford Beef Selection which has proved to be a major success in Lidl Ireland and represents one of the successful partnerships now in place between Lidl and Irish farmers.

During this event, Slaney Foods held a competition where participants had to guess the Carcase Weight of a Hereford Steer Born in April 2013.  The draw created a lot of interest among those who visited the Stand. On Friday 26th September, the Carcase weight of the 17.5 month old Hereford sired steer bred by John Canty, Kildallkey, Trim and exhibited at the NPC was confirmed at Slaney Foods as 407 kgs.

The 3 Lucky winners of this competition were Marie McGrath from Clashmore, Co. Waterford, Angela Armstrong from Navan, Co. Meath and Pat Lawlor from Ballymore-Eustace, Co. Kildare.  On the 15th October each winner was presented with a Lidl Voucher worth €500 at Slaney Foods in Bunclody, Co. Wexford.  These vouchers were sponsored by The Irish Hereford Breed Society, Lidl and Slaney Foods International. A huge thank you to all who took part in this competition and congratulations once again to the 3 winners!

Hereford Competition Winners cannot resist “a LIDL bit of Magic”

Nicholas O'Connor left and James O'Connor 2nd from right receive their prize of a €400 LIDLshopping voucher from John McDonnell Slaney Foods, and Larry Feeney Irish Hereford Breed Society Ltd.
Nicholas O’Connor left and James O’Connor 2nd from right receive their prize of a €400 LIDLshopping voucher from John McDonnell Slaney Foods, and Larry Feeney Irish Hereford Breed Society Ltd.

Over the past three months the Irish Hereford Breed Society has in association with partners Slaney Foods run a major competition to attract additional suppliers and cattle to its certified Irish Hereford Beef program.

The project has been extremely successful in its object of attracting top class beef farmers and quality assured Hereford sired steers and heifers for the fast growing “Irish Hereford Beef” range at major supermarket chain LIDL.

The latest and final winner in the current competition is Wexford man Nicholas O’Connor of Spring Farm Drumgoold. Nicholas who farms with son James runs a substantial autumn calving dairy herd of 175 cows. Approximately 40% are mated to Friesian/Holstein bulls for replacements with the remainder to Hereford. Some Hereford sired calves are sold off at about eight weeks with the heifer calves more often than not making similar or better prices than the bull calves according to James. The remainder are retained for finishing on farm and taken through to slaughter.

Unusually for nowadays no camera is used to supervise calving since calving does not provide any major difficulties. Ease of calving is a given with the majority of the herds cows calving down without assistance of any kind. If one is due to calve at bedtime one might wait on for completion of the event otherwise its early to bed etc.

All winners of the competition to date had the choice of a €500 Hereford bull purchase voucher or a €400 LIDL shopping voucher. Without exception all winners have chosen to experience “a Lidl bit of Magic” selecting the €400 LIDL voucher as their prize. Shoppers at the fast growing chain have the opportunity to purchase top quality products including Irish Hereford Beef. Take the opportunity to visit a store near you and purchase one of the many cuts of Irish Hereford Beef available including the new mini Irish Hereford Burgers just added to the range which are scrumptious.

Additional supplies of steers and heifers are required to meet the continuing expansion in demand. Call Slaney Foods today at Eamonn on 087/677 9567or John at 087/269 5119

Youth Workshop Balleen Herd

A sincere thank you to Tom Brennan and Family who hosted the event at their prizewinning Balleen Herd. Sincere thanks also to the well known Leo McEnroe who provided an enlightening experience for all those in attendance young and old. Leo has a wealth of knowledge and experience built up through several generations of McEnroe cattlemen.

Those in attendance came from a wide area and their presence is much appreciated. There is no doubt that all present gained much practical knowledge and advice and will hopefully put it into practise over the coming months at shows and sales. There were excellent prizes awarded and a very good entry in the stock judging competition.

An excellent BBQ of Irish Hereford Beef burgers was provided. The burgers part the LIDL Hereford range of cuts were sponsored by Slaney Foods processors of this quality beef. Eamonn Moulds (087 677 9567) representing Slaney Foods says that sales of the Hereford beef brand continue to grow week on week and that extra quality assured Hereford sired steers and heifers are required to meet demand.
