Demand for Herefords continue with prices remaining steady.

Hereford cross calves are consistently a good seller this Spring with demand and prices remaining strong to date.

Bandon mart

Prices relaxed a small bit for calves this week as supply began to meet demand but there were still great prices achieved for Hereford sired calves in Bandon with the top stronger calves selling for €330 and the majority selling for between €150 – €260. At the sale, Tommy Moyles commented that there was little appetite for calves under 50kgs.

IFJ Average Price Report

The average price report in this week’s Irish Farmer Journal (dated Saturday 5th March) seen a drop in the average price for Hereford calves which would be usual for this time of year with the surge of calves coming out for sale. Despite this, Hereford calves held their own with three week old bull calves averaging at €244 and the same aged heifer calves averaging at €188.

Ballyjamesduff Co-op Mart

The calf trade took off this week in Ballyjamesduff with Hereford calves earning up on €260/head. Angus calves were earning between €70 – €200 and Friesian bred calves were selling much lower.

IFJ Average Price report

As reported by Declan Marren in the Irish Farmers Journal last week (26th February) – Hereford heifers are consistently running €15-€20/head above Angus heifers in recent weeks with the average price being €206. Three week old bull calves this week averaged at €260 for Herefords also.

During the same edition of the newspaper, Tommy Moyles reported that Hereford calves weighing 70kgs made between 280 and €380 in Bandon last Monday week.

GVM Kilmallock

There were two Hereford cross Bull Calves born on the 7th and 9th February that sold for €405 each at GVM Kilmallock last week.

Gortatlea Mart

Last week’s calf sale at Gortatlea mart saw a January 2022 born Hereford calf sell for €365.

Waterford Ross Mart

Waterford Ross mart held their weekly calf sale last Saturday 26th February. The final section of the sale contained the Hereford sired calves that were on offer at the sale.

The bull calves sold from €130 up to a top call of €350, while the heifers on offer sold from €100 to €330.

Commenting on the trade overall, Richard said: “The quality of calves on offer this week was a lot better, with a lot less of those softer plainer calves on offer. “There was a noticeable increase of customers back at ring side with the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions with the Saturday mart really suiting the part-time farmers.”

Carnew Mart

Carnew mart calf sale on Saturday 19th February saw 486 calves on offer with a very reliable trade.

Hereford bulls sold for between €180-€400 with Hereford heifers earning between €140-€285.
