This week and last has seen big demand for Hereford calves across the nation with high prices being achieved for good Hereford cross bulls & heifers that in some cases matched prices being paid for continental sired calves.
Carnaross
There were nearly 300 calves on offer at Carnaross Mart’s weekly calf sale last week.
One of the top prices on the day went to a late November 2021-born Hereford-cross heifer which sold for €500. Another November born Hereford cross heifer sold for €400 on the day also.

Kilmallock
During the calf sale in Kilmallock last Monday, 14th February, Hereford cross calves were on a high with a Hereford bull calf topping the Hereford trade at €410.
Carnew
Carnew Mart held its weekly calf sale last Saturday, February 12th, which saw over 360 calves presented for sale.
A number of marts in recent weeks have begun displaying dam breed for calves being sold. Commenting on this, the mart manager said: “Displaying the dam’s breed on the board really gave buyers more confidence when buying calves”.
Good coloured calves were in high demand with Hereford-cross bull calves selling for between €280 and €360.

Cootehill
There were top class prices and 100% clearance for calves at Cootehill Livestock Mart this week!
This 15 day old Hereford bull calf made €320;
