There was a large entry of 41 bulls and 25 heifers for the Premier Hereford Autumn Show & sale which was held in GVM Tullamore last Saturday 19th October. Judging these large classes was no easy task for judge Albert De Cogan, who executed the task flawlessly. There were some very strong bulls & top heifers presented on the day. Although a small sell rate, over 50% of bulls sold for over €3000 leaving the average price €3060. This was very much a breeder focused sale which is a healthy sign for the breed going forward as quality bloodlines were bought to enhance and sustain Hereford herds. Irish Hereford Prime kindly sponsored €200 to the 5 highest priced bulls sold on the day which proved a great support to breeders.
‘Balleen Wayfair’ topped the sale making €4000 for breeder Tom Brennan, owner of the long established Balleen herd in Freshford, Co. Kilkenny. ‘Wayfair’ is bred from ‘Balleen Maeve 785 Et’ and sired by ‘Towra Brilliant’ who also sired Kilmallock Champion 2018 ‘Baleen Banjo’ who sold for €4000 during that sale & also sired Kilmallock Champion 2017.
The judge drew out Tom & Anselm Fitzgerald’s bull ‘Griananpoll 1 Starman’ as Male Champion on the day who went on to sell for a modest €3000. ‘Griananpoll 1 Starman’ is bred from ‘Griananpoll 1 Orange M 661’ and sired by ‘Grianan Parker’ who has proven himself by siring quality stock for the pioneer Grianan herd to date including the top priced bull in the Premier Spring Sale last March 2019 ‘Grianan Showgun’ who sold for €5000 and the Nenagh Champion 2019 ‘Grianan cooper robin o 705’.
Cill Cormaic Herefords proved to have a very successful day with both of the bulls exhibited. David Larkin, of Cill Cormaic herd, Co. Offaly struck off on the right footing with lot no. 14 ‘Cill Cormaic Quinn’, bred by ‘Cill Cormaic Sally’ & sired by ‘Cedar Liam’; ‘Quinn’ is a full brother to ‘Cill Cormaic Marvel’ who is currently in Dovea Genetics. The 2 traits and fertility tested bull sold for €3500.
David Larkin’s success didn’t stop there – ‘Cill Cormaic Quigley’ is bred from a wizard cow; ‘Cill Cormaic Iris’ and sired again by the powerful and long standing Cill Cormaic sire; ‘Cedar Liam’. This Fertility & 3 traits tested bull passed out ‘Cill Cormaic Quinn’ as he went on to sell for €3800.

Great success followed the heifers exhibited on the day too with ‘Kilsunny Doreens Odette’ being awarded Female Champion. This fine heifer was a prize winner at the National Calf show 2018. ‘Odette’ is bred from ‘Kilsunny Doreens Ebony’ who has produced 9 calves in 9 years bringing untold success to the Kilsunny herd, who are no strangers to the winners enclosure. Being sired by ‘Glaslough Judge’, ‘Odette’ is the last daughter to be offered for sale thus being very valuable and was sold for €3300.
Appel Herefords topped the heifer sales ring with ‘Appel 1 Superstar’ selling for a top price of €3500. This heifer is a star out of National Champion ‘Solpoll 1 Lawman’. ‘Superstar’ is just one of the many daughters produced by ‘Lawman’, all of which have proven to be great mothers and producing lots of milk.
