Top price for Herefords at Nenagh Spring show and sale of €3700.

The Nenagh Spring show and sale was held on Saturday 18th May 2019, with top quality stock for sale. There were 38 quality bulls exhibited on the day. Some of the bulls booked in did not exhibit as they had been sold off the farm previous to the sale which is a good sign of the demand for quality Hereford bulls.

Louth breeders, father and son duo, Eamon and John McKiernan took home the top price of €3700 for the superb 14 month old bull ‘Knockmountagh Drifter’, sired by ‘Cill Cormaic Kasper’ and bred from ‘Knockmountagh Sweet Pea’.

The average price for the sale was €2400, similar to that of the previous sale in Kilmallock in April.

Although a tough start to the day, there was continued success for long time breeder, JJ Farrell with two bulls exhibited taking home a total of €5950, achieving an impressive €3200 for ‘Trillick Jake’, sired by ‘Free Town Hotspur’ and bred out of ‘Cloughran Sally’ and €2750 for ‘Trillick Vern’, sired by ‘Clipston Squire’ and bred out of ‘Trillick Diva 2’.

Champion bull ‘Balleen Benefit’, sired by ‘Towra Brilliant’ and bred from homebred ‘Balleen Molly’ , was of fantastic quality and a half brother of the Champion bull in the Kilmallock sale in both 2018 and 2019, but unfortunately failed to reach his reserve for exhibitor Tom Brennan from Co. Kilkenny.

T&J Hayes, travelling from Limerick, took home €2650 for the August born bull ‘Quinsboro Morgan 1st’, sired by ‘Gageboro Morgan’ and bred from ‘Tory Hill Lily’.

No stranger to the successes of the shows and sales, Michael O’Keeffe from Newmarket, Co. Cork achieved Reserve Champion for ‘Dominarigle 1 Patriot 740 ET’, sired by ‘Gurteragh Oakley 652’ and bred out of ‘Dominarigle 1 Sydney 611’ who secured a fine price of €2600.

Cavan breeder, Philip Lynch also secured €2600 for ‘Carrick Jordan’, sired by ‘Haven Kingpin (Hyf)’ and bred from his own bred cow ‘Carrick Tina’.

S&N Heatrick were also successful on the day as they got €2550 for ‘Glaslough Transformer’, sired by ‘Ballyaville Ger (Hyf)’ and bred from ‘Glaslough Joyce’.

Although demand was not as good as anticipated, the many bulls sold in advance of the sale are a firm indicator of current demand for quality Hereford bulls. All buyers and sellers were happy with they’re days work and are looking forward to a productive Summer.

Many thanks to the Judge Tommy Creegan from Charleville, Co. Limerick and many thanks also to all the staff of Nenagh mart who organised and facilitated the event.
