Mullingar enjoyed a glorious day of sunshine yesterday which led to high numbers entering the gates and enjoying everything the showgrounds had to offer. Large crowds were observed within the walled garden, which is were the livestock exhibitors are usually situated, combined with swarms of spectators around each of the rings with no shortage of interest around the Hereford arena. A fine turn out of white heads were on show with a number of animals demonstrating great breed characteristics who will hopefully make an appearance at the National Show in Tullamore in a months time.
Michael Molloy took the Champion sash for the second year in a row with his exceptionally well muscled bull ‘Moyclare Quinlan’. This fine bull calf sired by Church Hill Nigel caught the eye of many spectators with some even saying “he’s better than last year’s champion”. Having won two Championships so far this year and accumulating a lot of interest ‘Quinlan’ will be one to watch out for in the October sale, and if he truly is better than last year’s champion then potential buyers had better bring their cheque books as last year’s winner ‘Moyclare Phoenix’ sold for a whopping €6,600.
Reserve Champion was awarded to long time breeders Tom & Anselm Fitzgerald’s bull ‘Griananpoll 1 Ted’. A bull of great length at just 13 months who will likely take after his mother in the show circuit as time goes on, with his mother ‘Griananpoll 1 Orange M661’ enjoying great success last year winning Supreme Hereford Champion at the North Tipperary Show and Reserve Supreme Hereford Champion at the Royal Meath Show in 2017, two shows that would be recognised as major events within the Hereford community.
