Big Prize Money Brings Big Crowds to Longford

What was a great show last year turned out to be an even better show this year in Longford. The event enjoyed it’s second year in the new showground’s which made the trip for exhibitors and spectators much more accessible. Conditions were excellent for showing cattle as there were plenty of clouds throughout the day combined with a refreshing summer breeze which relinquished any undue stress on cattle. It has to be said that the quality of Herefords parading around the ring was truly of the highest caliber, which was to be expected given the substantial prize money up for grabs. This munificent support was kindly sponsored by Paul & Vincent Animal Feeds and Flynn & Lynch Financial Services, with both parties backing a €1,000 each for the Champion Calf line ups in both the bull and heifer sections.

Champion at the event was Hugh & Sarah Murrays 12 month old ‘Shiloh-Farm Elite’. This was the choice of UK judges Philip & Laura Vincent from Pulham Herefords. However, before being crowned the overall champion, ‘Shiloh Farm Elite’ came first in his class which included a total of 12 bulls making the judging process difficult and lengthy as the standard of bulls was of such high quality. After winning his class and prior to being selected as champion, ‘Shiloh Farm Elite’ went on the take first place in the ‘County Longford Paul & Vincent All-Ireland Hereford Bull Calf Championship’. This smashing bull shares the same sire as last years champion – Steil Gerard, with last years winner believed to have been sold for approximately €5,000 within a week of the event. I’m sure Hugh & Sarah can expect similar interest in their ‘elite’ bull seeing that there was such a large spectatorship around the ring along with a number of UK breeders present.

Having previously won her class ‘Moyclare Piscies’ went on to win  Reserve Champion at the event. This heifer of great length has enjoyed an impressive showing career so far having won a number of rosettes at various summer shows during the past 12 months followed by finishing the year on a high when she was crowned Reserve Supreme Champion & Senior Female Champion at the 2017 Hereford National Calf Show. Molloy also enjoyed success in the male section with his bull ‘Moyclare Quinlan’ who was reserve in the Paul & Vincent Champion Bull calf line up while also having previously won Supreme Champion Hereford followed by Interbreed Champion the weekend before at the Flavours of Fingal Show.

After having a successful day at Gorey the previous weekend, Padraig McGrath continued his winning streak taking red rosettes for a number of classes, but what put the icing on the cake was when Mr. McGrath won the ‘County Longford Flynn & Lynch All-Ireland Hereford Heifer Calf Championship’ with his year old heifer “Kye Holly 794”. A very profitable day for the Roscommon man who’s winnings, I’m sure will be invested wisely in to the retirement fund with the help of financial expert Mr. Enda Flynn. Frances McKiernan’s ‘Bellingham Nevin’ took Reserve in the Heifer calf champion line up. A very attractive looking heifer sired by the UK bull Church Preen Galileo which currently resides in the Ardmulchan herd owned by Philip & Catherine Smyth.

Local Hereford breeder and formers IHBS chairman JJ Farrell of Trillick Hereford’s deserves recognition for all the time and hard work he put in to organising such a fantatsict event, securing the sponsorship and also recruiting the two UK judges, Philp & Laura Vincent.
