Gorey Agricultural Show 2018

Judge: Nigel Heatrick from the Glaslough Herd in Co. Monaghan

Gorey show took place at the weekend with approximately 50 entries down for the Hereford section with some very stylish animals in each of the classes. One of the earlier shows of the year, it is now that time of year where the showing circuit will take full flight, which usually means there will be a show scheduled every weekend from now until the middle of September at various locations across the country.

Monaghan man Nigel Heatrick who comes from the well established Glaslough herd was given the duty of judging the event, which became a tedious task for each of the champion line-ups given the high standard of cattle that was on exhibition. Local man John Jones came out victorious with his smashing cow ‘Clonroe Deirdre’ being crowned the overall champion. Tom Brennan took home the reserve champion for his smashing heifer calf ‘Balleen Pride 051’ who had previously won junior champion in the females.

Padraig McGrath made the long voyage from Roscommon, which certainly proved to be worthwhile as he took home three major titles. His heifer ‘Kye Holly’ came second to Brennan’s winning junior female reserve champion followed by a double wammy in the junior bull calf line-up with ‘Kye Harry 797’, a classy looking bull crowed champion with ‘Cloonshanagh Gerard 795’ winning the reserve.

A word of thanks to Slaney Foods for their generous sponsorship towards the Hereford section, which they have keenly supported for a number of years now. The Jones family also deserve recognition for the amount of time they give freely in helping to organize such a wonderful event.

The Irish Hereford Society would also like to highlight that we are running our annual bursary competition again this year, offering five €1,000 bursaries for successful candidates. For more information please check out our website, social media channels or phone the office.
