The West Cork Hereford Club held a very successful spring calf promotion at Cork Marts Bandon where the quality of calves forward provided some difficult decisions for the judges. The first prize-winning bull calf was shown by Patrick Fitton, Waterfall, Cork while the 1st prize-winning heifer calf was shown by Pat O’Sullivan of Barryroe. Hereford calf prices are showing a margin of €60 to €80 above other breeds according to a recent report in the Irish Farmers Journal. Given the surplus of dairy stock currently available a number of dairy farmers have plans to use Hereford across their herds either by I or a Hereford bull and buying in replacements which will provide additional grazing area for their milking herd.
