Expectations well exceeded at Hereford Premier Autumn Show & Sale at Tullamore

Demand for both Hereford bulls and females exceeded expectations at the Irish Hereford Bred Society’s premier autumn show and sale at Tullamore.

Whilst demand for bulls was excellent providing a bull average of €3,200, it was ladies day as the females outdid the males reaching a top price of €5,000 and €5,100 paid for the Champion and Reserve Champion Female while the top price male sold at €4,000.

Henry Dudley, The Populars, Dovea, this year’s Society recipient of the Hall of Fame Award at Athlone had a field day with his Champion Female Lakelodge Champayne 3rd by herd sire Ballyaville Caradock out of Lakelodge Champayne 2nd selling to Co Cork breeder Jim Kingston, Riverstick, Co Cork at €5,000. In addition Lakelodge Lass’ Una 3rd again by Caradock and out of Lakelodge Una 2nd was purchased at €4,200. A third heifer from the herd Lakelodge Vera 3rd out of Vera 2nd and sired by Caradock sold to well-known Co Louth breeder Eamonn McKiernan, Monasterboice at €3,100 resulting in a very satisfying day for Henry.

The Reserve Champion the fifteen month old Moyclare Rose 26th was Hereford and interbreed champion at Trim earlier in the year. Exhibited by Michael Molloy, Glebe, Belmont she is sired by his very successful herd sire Brocca Saviour out of Moyclare Christina and was purchased  and was purchased at the day’s top price of €5,100 by Gerry McNamara, Labasheeda, Ennis who is currently assembling a quality herd. Mr Molloy also exhibited Moyclare Norman again sired by Brocca Saviour and out of Moyclare Ursula 4th. He found a new home in Northern Ireland with Gordon Burleigh, Kinawley, Co Fermanagh on a bid of €3.600.

The Male Champion Cloncullane General 2 was exhibited by one of the Society’s most senior members Sean Neary, Cloncullane, Strokestown. Sired by the successful Kilsunny Goliath out of Clooncullane Holly he sold to John Lawe, Kilglass, Co Roscommon at €3,800 and was possibly the bargain of the day.

Reserve Champion Male and Supreme Champion at the National Hereford Show Grianan Oscar bred and exhibited by T & A Fitzgerald, Mount Temple, Moate was the top priced Bull at €4,000. Sired by Australian import Smithston Darby his dam is Grianan Orange H 494 a Churchill Storm daughter. The purchaser was Gerry Looby, Ballinagleragh, Clarkstown, Co Tipperary.

Two bulls forward from the Trillick herd of JJ Farrell Longford were sired by his UK bred herd sire Free Town Hotspur. Trillick Paul out of Trillick Betty at just fifteen months old sold at €3,800 to John Johnston, Tomagaddy, Gorey, Co Wexford. Herd mate Trillick Tom 2 out of Trillick Daisy by Steil Gerard sold for a top bid of €3,600 to Gordon Buchanan, Lisbellew, Co Fermanagh.

S & N Heatrick, Glaslough, Co Monaghan received €3,600 for their Glaslough Karl son the eighteen month old Glaslough Nationwide out of Glaslough Gemma. The purchaser was Ted O’Sullivan, Bartlemy, Co Cork.

Congratulations to Dr John Lalor, The Old Rectory, Timolin, Co Kildare who exhibiting for the first time at Tullamore received a final bid of €3,500 for his Mawarra Sentimental sired bull out of Bally-Dowel Gillian purchased as a heifer from Joe Maher, of Ballydowel, Rathmoyle, Co Kilkenny.

Kilsunny Lincoln a 2nd prize-winner exhibited by Trevor Dudley, Dovea, Thurles and by herdsire Glaslough Judge out of Kilsunny Lass Glitter sold to local Hereford breeders  Joe and Ivor  Deverell, Ballyaville, Geashill at €3,350.

Another senior Society member to hit the highlights was Willie Jones, Creagh, Kenagh, Co Longford who in partnership with grandson David had two heifers forward. Caonachpoll 1 Angela by Kilsunny Goliath whose dam Creaghpoll 1 Cattie is by Beverlyhills 1 Thady a third prize-winner sold to Mervyn Thompson, Tandragee, Co Armagh at €3,500 while herd sibling Caonach Sandra a first prize-winner also by Goliath sold at €3,500 to the herd of Nelson McCrabbe, Raphoe, Co Donegal.

Overall there was a 72% clearance with the bull average at €3,200. Range €2150 to €4,000 and females averaging €2,784. Range €1,700 to €5,100.

The Society’s final sale of 2015 takes place at GVM Kilmallock this Friday October 23rd. Show 11.00am Sale 1.00pm There are 40 bulls and 2 Females catalogued for the event.
